North Fork receives
the Outreach and Education Award from the West Virginia Department of
Environmental Protection.
The Friends of Blackwater was awarded the Outreach and Education Award
for creating watershed awareness and changing attitudes. “The Friends of the
Blackwater group is best known for its efforts to save the Blackwater
Canyon. In 2002 they helped form the North Fork Watershed Project to help
address acid mine drainage on the North Fork of the Blackwater,” Becher
said. “Recently, members of this project have instituted a number of
educational programs with local schools and community groups, a series of
newspaper articles in the Parsons Advocate and a continued presence at local
events.”
